Why are we not trained on brazilian waxing in beauty school?
This question has been asked by many frustrated estheticians, graduating from beauty school with this specific expectation. I will never forget my first bikini wax, which was in beauty school, in front of the entire class. Why I volunteered I will never know, however we did not have paper bikini panties for clients or students. I was naked, nervous and scared, sweating off the baby powder!
So imagine to my horror when that first strip was removed, all of the students then wanted to touch my now hairless bikini line! So after that very odd experience, someone from the back yelled “Can you take it all off? We want to see how to do that too!” Our esthetics teacher immediately stopped and said “Brazilian Waxing is not on the state board test, I am here to prepare you to pass the state board test.” Words that I often repeat to new beauty students and new estheticians.
Having had the opportunity to visited many beauty schools over the past 10 years, the common theme from a majority of them is the beauty school instructors placing “brazilian waxing” in the advanced post-graduate training track. On many occasions I have had to explain to instructors who have been teaching for 10 or more years that our industry has changed and many esthetic jobs include brazilian waxing as a requirement. Causing a gap between newly graduated estheticans without brazilian waxing training and aquiring an esthetic job.
Do I feel brazilian waxing should be taught in beauty school prior to graduating? No, because not all instructors are knowledgable in brazilian waxing. I do, however, believe that students who are shown a brazilian waxing training dvd will have a better understanding of what is expected during the service, wax application, etc. Post graduate education will never end and including training courses on a your resume always helps!
Like many estheticians, I had to take classes after graduating just to see what a “brazilian wax” was! I truly believe if I had the opportunity to watch a dvd in beauty school that I would have had a better understanding as an esthetician.
